Woodland Indians in Virginia the invention of pottery enabled better food storage, but heavy pots made sense only in a society that occupied one place for long periods of time Source: Native Americans responded by changing their technology for hunting, placing smaller points on their spears and hunting smaller game as the large mammals disappeared and deciduous forest expanded to cover Virginia. That shift in Native American culture is defined today by archeologists as the shift from Paleo-Indian to Archaic. The shift from Archaic to Woodland is also defined by new technology and new patterns of behavior. The Woodland label marks a distinctive evolution in Native American culture that evolved from internal reasons. That cultural change probably was not triggered by a major shift in climate, in contrast to the change between Paleo-Indian and Archaic periods. Archaeologists distinguish the Woodland period from the preceding Archaic period by adoption of agriculture ultimately including corn and widespread adoption of pottery. The switch from hunting with a spear including those thrown with an atl-atl to hunting with a bow and arrow came in the middle of the Woodland Period.

The earliest known records show a letter from Robert King of Scots to the monks of Scone Abbey requesting permission to use stone from their quarries at Kincarrathie and Balcormoc now Quarrymill for the Kirk of Perth and the bridges of Perth and the Earn. The letter is dated 4th July , and is the oldest record of activity at the Quarrymill site.

The site at Kincarrathie has been filled in. It is also believed that stone from Quarrymill was used to construct Scone Abbey and, later, may have been transported up river to build Stanley Mills. In a site known as Balchormack is shown to the north of the Annaty Burn and a site referred to as Quarrelmiln is shown slightly closer to the River Tay. Sandstone extraction and weaving at Quarrymill was well underway by the 18th Century when there were numerous mills spinning cotton, extracting starch from potatoes for use in weaving and the textile industry and grinding bone to use in dyes and fertilisers.

There are examples of the sandstone throughout the Woodland Walk, although some can only be seen through the natural plantlife which has been allowed to flourish to enhance the walk itself. The Annaty Burn which runs through the Woodland Park has a wealth of history associated with it. The name Annaty indicates a mother church, or a church which contains relics of the founder. The site of the church may be where diggings in revealed red sandstone foundations belonging to a small rectangular building, and there were also early hut circles visible here in the 19th Century.

However, this theory is not fully substantiated. According to local legend, in when it was known that Edward I was going to remove the Stone of Destiny to England, monks from Scone Abbey are reputed to have removed the stone and hidden it in a safe place, and replaced it with a stone that was taken from the Annaty Burn. This may explain why some believe that the Stone of Destiny which rests in Edinburgh Castle is formed from exactly the kind of stone that is found around Quarrymill.

During the intervening years the Trustees have met A K Bell’s wishes and the Woodland Park is maintained to high standards and is enjoyed by the residents of Perth and visitors alike to this day.

Map of northern California counties Map of the three Californias on the Cal 3 ballot proposal Northern California California Southern California Northern California is not a formal geographic designation. Popularly, though, “Northern California” usually refers to the state’s northernmost 48 counties. Because of California’s large size and diverse geography, the state can be subdivided in other ways as well.

For example, the Central Valley is a region that is distinct both culturally and topographically from coastal California, though in northern versus southern California divisions, the Sacramento Valley and most of the San Joaquin Valley are usually placed in northern California. Extreme northern residents have felt under-represented in state government and in attempted to form a new state with southwestern Oregon to be called Jefferson , or more recently to introduce legislation to split California into two or three states.

The coastal area north of the Bay Area is referred to as the North Coast , while the interior region north of Sacramento is referred by locals as the Northstate.
