While Schwinn often had a reputation for building heavy bikes for kids, the Paramount line had a reputation for finely crafted, relatively light road bikes. That is obviously a great price. The very nice woman selling it was good natured about the low price. The bike had belonged to her uncle who no longer used it.

They fought hard on the dirt tracks, race tracks, hill climbs and sales floors, and in their s heyday, the competition between the Big 3 made for the most exciting racing anyone had ever seen between the fastest and most advanced racing bikes in the world. Schwinn Serial Numbers and Date Codes
If you want professional, accurate information, instead of amateur guessing, here is where you get it. But the biggest mistake that people make is they listen to DIY’ers and presume they can diagnose their own serial numbers in a snap. And they are usually wrong. It requires a lot of study and at least some expertise.

The frame was free of rust, and in unusually nice condition for its age. I kept as much as I could of the original Dura Ace components, but I knew that I would replace the wheelset, not wanting to ride on 27 inch 20mm tubulars through downtown Portland. At first, I considered a b conversion as the best option for adapting this bike to my riding style.
While possible, this amount of reach is not ideal. There are brake calipers which have enough reach to accomplish the conversion, but they are not in my constellation of desirable components. Instead, I converted it to c, using the existing anodized Dura Ace calipers, which had plenty of reach for a c wheelset.

Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made.

Above, Punnett Companion, below close-up of the badge. Rochester, NY There were several ways to fashion a bicycle built for two, but the Punnett, with a pair of frames, side-by-side attached to a pair of in-line wheels, was one of the more unlikely ones. The rear axle had a sprocket on either side, each powered by a corresponding chain, front sprocket, and pedals.
If this seemed like difficult cycling and balancing the Punnett with two riders was no easy task there was another option: This was not entirely comfortable, but it was considered practical in getting the machine to and from the abode of the wheelman’s lady friend. It is rumored, that this bicycle belonged to the actor Steve McQueen, however, we have nothing to substantiate that.
It is possible, McQueen had a collection of “About motorcyles, over 55 cars, five airplanes, and over ten thousand miscellaneous items. Most everything was auctioned off by his family in Buying a Sears bike on the installment plan provided youngsters with the first payment books of their consumer careers. The innovation and beauty of these Elgins are matched by few other bicycles.
Elgins were sold through Sears, and Sears was one of the largest distributors in America, Elgin naturally commanded one of the largest market shares of the time. Keep in mind that the bikes were not only sold in stores, but through mail order catalogs as well, in fact many small towns did not have a Sears store, but virtually every town had a Sears catalog store. The catalog store in Laramie, Wyoming in the ‘s was a desk in a hardware store!
The rear hub was off-center, and when the rider pulled on the handlebars and provided some body English, the machine propelled itself nicely.

Jay Divinagracia The human eye is a remarkable thing. It can pick up on incredibly subtle details, and your brain transforms those signals into snap judgements. In the case of bicycles, the eye can pick out imperfections like a magnet. Rust, scuffed and scratched paint, shoddy or worn out components: I know how to trick the eye.
There are a few simple and quick ways to restore your vintage bike and make it look like a million bucks or at least several hundred.

I needed daycare and I needed a shower. My new mom friends invited me to take spin classes with them, but between the coaches shouting out mysterious numbers and the coordination involved, I kindly declined; spin was more than my foggy-mom brain could handle at the time, so I stuck to my elliptical, yoga, and Zumba classes. This pre-dated the Soul Cycle invasion of New York, before cadence and tap-backs became part of the everyday jargon.
By the time my son learned to love the gym, I was pregnant with baby 2. Luckily, my little girl eased into daycare and I soon realized after taking my first spin class that I had been missing out: At this same time, the condo I lived in had redesigned its gym, and I convinced management to add a spin bike. But what can you do with a spin bike and no instructor?
I downloaded apps and watched YouTube videos, but no good solution existed at the time. Fast-forward to the suburbs and a house with room for exercise equipment. I asked those friends about it, but no one had purchased a bike, yet everyone agreed it was a brilliant concept: I downloaded the Peloton app to my iPad, free at the time, and investigated. Currently, Peloton offers more than 8, on-demand rides, ranging from 5 minutes to 90 minutes.

Contact The History of the Folding Bike There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world’s first folding bike in Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose.
The truth is that the folding bike has been around for considerably longer than one might imagine and most claims of being the first are erroneous. First things first though, you can’t have a folding bike without the invention of the bicycle itself. So a very short history lesson on the bicycle is in order.

From to , Schwinn pioneered its own models of cruisers, touring bikes and three-speeds, fabricating their own frames and components in-house. After the “Bicycle Boom” of the s, however, Schwinn’s proprietary frame-building technology and heavier bikes became less economically viable in an increasingly weight-obsessed industry–resulting in millions of unique vintage and antique bikes that can be identified by their serial numbers.
Dating these bikes is usually the first step toward proper appraisal of a vintage Schwinn machine. Find the serial number. Upon production, all Schwinns had a serial number stamped in one of three places on the frame. The first possible location is on the underside of the bottom bracket. Sheldon Brown’s Bicycle Glossary defines the bottom bracket as “the part of the frame around which the pedal cranks revolve. The second possible location of the serial number is on the left rear dropout–the “fork end that allows the rear wheel to be removed without derailing the chain first,” according to Brown’s Glossary.
Look for the left dropout on the same side as the chain.
